In Patanjali Yoga Sutra 2nd pada 46th sutra explains as:
स्थिरसुखमासनम् ॥
sthira-sukham-āsanam ||46||
Posture (asana) is to be seated in a position which is firm but relaxed.
In Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Chapter 2nd , Verse 2 explains as:
चले वाते चलं चित्तं निश्चले निश्चलं भवेत् ।
योगी स्थाणुत्वम् आप्नोति ततो वायुं निरोधयेत् ॥
When the breath wanders, or is irregular, the mind is also unsteady.
But when the breath is still, so is the mind and the yogi lives long. So one should restrain the breath.
In Patanjali Yoga Sutra 3rd pada 2nd sutra explains as:
तत्र प्रत्ययैकतानता ध्यानम् ||
tatra pratyayaika-tānatā dhyānam
tatra pratyaya-eka-tānatā dhyānam
There [in the state of dhāraṇā], a singleness of attention to arising thoughts is dhyāna.
In Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Chapter 1st , Verse 17th explains as:
हठस्य प्रथमाङ्गत्वाद् आसनं पूर्वम् उच्यते ।
कुर्यात् तद् आसनं स्थैर्यम् आरोग्यं चाङ्गलाघवम् ॥
Āsana, being the initial limb of Haṭha, is spoken of first. Āsana brings about steadiness, improved health and lightness of limb.
